2011-03-01/31 Monthly LOVIEE

Spring is upon us again, and there’s a bumper crop of exciting events coming up this month to show for it. Between music, theatre, and other festivities, it’s time to pull out the calendar and mark off some dates.

For those who aren’t following the Twitter feed or Facebook page, or just flat out missed the post, I posted there about a major announcement set for Monday (the 28th) at noon. This announcement is one of the biggest things to hit the site since the wide launch, and I want to make sure I don’t leave anyone out.

Thanks for your support. And now, on with the list.

2011-02-21/27 Weekly LOVIEE

This was due to be posted on or before President’s Day. However, circumstances arose which made that impossible, some of which will be posted to my other blog, Rant Roulette in the coming days. (I’ll give you a hint: it’s really hard to make a computer work without electricity.) Thankfully, I didn’t see anything that important for Monday or Tuesday nights, outside of things that had already been posted.

In the interest of completeness, here’s the opening paragraph I had ready to go before all heck broke loose:

President’s Day, the nearing end of winter, and the coming dawn of spring are upon us this week. Even though our winters in Houston are nowhere near as brutal as some cities farther north or even farther out in the desert, I always celebrate the end of winter. And here are some ways to celebrate if you are so inclined.

And now, on with the list.

Continuing Through Sunday 02-27

I Shot Rock: The Music Photography of Mark C. Austin, Block 7 Wine Company, 720 Shepherd Dr., 6-8pm. A showcase of works from the renowned local photographer who specializes in music concert photography. If you are at all a fan of the Houston music scene, it’s almost certain you’ve seen at least a few of his pictures somewhere (most likely in the Houston Press or on the walls of the Green Room at Warehouse Live). Last week to see this exhibit.11-SHOTROCK

OTH: Canned Acoustica II (2011-03-03)

It seems like only yesterday that I was at the first Canned Acoustica back in December. I had a great time and was introduced to many local musicians I had not had the chance to hear before at all, let alone live. I could go on and on, of course, but I already did so in a recap post.

Which is a really good thing, because that was the point of the recap post, and thus it’s not the point of this one. What is the point of this post, then? To give y’all a heads up that it’s happening again, this time on March 3 starting at 7pm. The venue (Warehouse Live’s Green Room) and event organizer (Mark C. Austin) both remain the same, as will the presence of affordable food trucks. For the second round, an entirely different musical line-up will be taking the stage (links are to official artist websites except where noted):

The price for entry is once again not cash, but canned food items; this time there is a specific minimum of two cans. More than half a ton (1000 pounds) of food was collected for the Houston Food Bank at the first event, and there’s no reason we as a community can’t improve upon that this time around.

So save the date, and if you’re so inclined, RSVP on Facebook. I’ll see you there!
