This coming Monday marks the 235th anniversary of our fine country’s independence. And there are plenty of places to celebrate it in style, right here in Houston.

Note that particularly in outlying areas, there may be fewer fireworks shows than normal this year as a precaution against fire due to the recent drought. I am intentionally not mentioning fireworks shows in my descriptions due to the fact any planned fireworks display could be canceled between now and July 4. If attending a fireworks show is an important part of your Independence Day celebrations, you are encouraged to verify whether or not your selected fireworks show is still happening. I have included the official website address for most if not all events to aid in this.

Please check back especially if nothing interests you, as I may learn of and add more events as late as Sunday night/early Monday morning.

Freedom Over Texas, Eleanor Tinsley Park, 4-10pm, free admission with canned food item ($8 without). Featuring performances by Jack Ingram, Chris Young, and Rodney Atkins, as well as a variety of fun activities for children and adults alike. 11-S-ID-1

A Star-Spangled Salute: Houston Symphony, Hermann Park, 8:30pm, free admission. A variety of patriotic music, ending with the 1812 Overture complete with booming cannons. 11-S-ID-2

Celebration of Freedom, 3775 South Main (Pearland), carnival begins at noon, stadium gates open at 6pm, concert begins at 6:30pm, free admission. A full-size carnival will be on-site during the day, and the evening concert will feature Hamilton Loomis for the evening concert. 11-S-ID-3

The 14th annual Red, Hot & Blue Festival, Town Green Park and Waterway Square (The Woodlands), 6pm-10pm, free admission. Live music, strolling performers, games, face painting for the kids, and more. 11-S-ID-4
