OTH: Canned Acoustica Turns One (11-M12-6)

This is less of an “on the horizon” event (usually this feature is for events a month or more away) as a “we’re about to run into it” event (next week). I had planned to get this up last week at the latest. So I’m bending “the rules” a bit as I wanted to make sure everyone who regularly follows the blog knows this is happening.

As hard as it is to believe it has been a full year since the very first Canned Acoustica at Warehouse Live, it has been. This upcoming show next Thursday marks the fifth installment in the long running series. The price of admission this time around is four cans of non-perishable food items for the Houston Food Bank, who has made a list of their most needed items avaiable. The star-studded lineup features the following acts (links are to official website except as noted):

Doors will open at 7pm. You may RSVP if you like on the Facebook event page (some of the past Canned Acoustica events, particularly the first, have had the set times posted there, but some have not). If you don’t know how to get to Warehouse Live, it’s at 813 St. Emanuel, which is between Rusk and Walker (take Rusk to St. Emanuel and turn right if you’re coming from downtown). See you there!

Rounding out the year are the following events, mostly related to the holiday season in some form. I may or may not get around to a New Year’s Eve LOVIEE, I will try my best but time to post to this blog is at a premium right now (I still have at least three recaps that need writing and posting).

Continuing This Month

Ice at Discovery Green, Discovery Green Park, see website for hours/days of operation, $10+tax including skate rental. Kinder Lake is transformed into an outdoor ice skating rink. Great for homesick northern transplants, or those who just want an ice skating fix and don’t feel like fighting Galleria area traffic. 11/12-IADG

Houston Ballet presents The Nutcracker, Wortham Center, see website for dates and ticket availability. Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet has become virtually synonymous with the holiday season. I believe everyone should see this at least once in their lifetime (I have, though it was years ago). 11-NUTCRACKER

Friday 12-09

Wobble Toys For Tots Drive, Club Isis, 1010 Prairie, 10pm-2am, 18+, free with complimentary shot before 11pm (21+)/$5 (under 21) or free with toy donation. Also, bring a toy and receive a free exclusive mix CD made one off for this occasion courtesy of the mighty Reso (Civil Music/Urban Graffiti)! 11-M12-2

Thursday 12-15

Houston Tweet Drive, Caroline Collective, 4820 Caroline, 7-10pm. Admission free with donation of a toy appropriate for ages 5-12. Music from Shellee Coley, Mason Lankford, and Andrew Karnavas; entertainment from Extra Life Houston and Smilebooth; food sponsored by Oh My! Pocket Pies and Good Dog Hot Dogs; beverages sponsored by St. Arnold, My TX Spirits, and Beaver’s. Benefiting Interfaith Ministries. 11-M12-4
